Words are akin to double edged swords. Both have to be handled with extreme care and caution. While those in politics may know all the tricks, poets have to be prepared to face not tomatoes or eggs but even batons and bricks. Reproduced here alongside an English translation by moi with prior permission from the poet is a word of caution in Tamil penned by Na Ve Arul:
வரம் வாங்கிவிட்டு கடவுளைக் கொன்றுவிடுகிறார்கள்
இந்தத் தலைப்பில்
ஒரு கவிதையை எழுத வேண்டாமென்று
எத்தனை தடவை சொல்லுவது
உனக்கு?
சந்தேகப்படும்படியான
எந்த வார்த்தையையும்
உனது கவிதையிலிருந்து
விலக்கிவிடுவது நல்லது.
நாக்குழறுகிற ஒரு குழந்தையிடமிருந்து
பிடுங்கிவந்த இந்தக் கவிதை
உன்னைக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்துவிடக் கூடியது
மேலும்
இது உன்னைக் கைது செய்வதற்கான
சந்தர்ப்பத்தை
ஒரு தவளை

வாக்காளரைக் குறிப்பதாகவும்
புதிய சந்தேகத்தை
வழக்கில்
வாதியின் மனுவாக முன்வைப்பார்கள்.
இன்னும் ஏதேதோ கேட்டுவிட்டு
கைது செய்துதான்
நாட்டின்
பிரிவினையைத் தடுக்கமுடியுமென்று
பிராது கொடுப்பார்கள்.
கவிஞனே
இதைவிட நீ
உயிர்ப்பிச்சை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு

THEY GET A BOON AND KILL THE GOD
How many times
do you have to be told
not to write a poem
with this title?
It is better to
delete any word
from your poem
that can
create a doubt.
This poem
snatched from
a child that babbles
can betray you.

to arrest you
like a frog
invites a snake?

the graves
