An old saying in Tamil goes: “The hallmark of good people is that they leave without goodbyes”. In this society of diminishing values, when we have come to the stage where no one has the time or inclination to care if the next person is alive or not, to abide by that wisdom would be wise, says Poet Riska Mukthar in this Tamil poem reproduced here with her prior permission alongside an English translation by moi:

கடைசியில்
நாம் என்னவாக எஞ்சுகிறோம்
என்பதில்தான்
இருக்கின்றது
எல்லாமும்
இல்லையா?
ஒரு கசக்கியெறியப்பட்ட காகிதமாக
வார் அறுந்தவொரு செருப்பாக
இலைகள் உதிர்த்தவொரு பட்டமரமாக
வண்ணங்களற்றுப்போன ஒரு சுவரோவியமாக
இதில்
எதுவோ
ஒன்றாக
இல்லை
இதைப்போன்ற
வேறொன்றாக
கடைசியில்
நாம் என்னவாக எஞ்சுகிறோம்
என்பதில்தான்
இருக்கின்றது
எல்லாமும்
இல்லையா?
எதுவாக எஞ்சுகிறோம்
என்பதை
அறிகையில்
நாம்
எல்லாவற்றையும்
இழந்திருப்போம்
அவமானங்கள் பழகிய
அபத்தம்தான்
வாழ்க்கை
என்றாலும்கூட
அனிச்சையாய் புன்னகைத்து

எவருக்கும்

எவரிடமும்
சொல்லாமல்
இங்கிருந்து
நான் கிளம்பி விடுவேன்!!!

Finally,
everything
is only in
what we are
leftover as,
isn’t it?
As a sheet of paper,
crumpled and chucked away;
a slipper with a torn strap,
a dead tree shorn of its leaves
or a wall painting, colours faded.
Any
one
of
these
or
something
else
like
this.
Finally,

When we learn
what have we been
leftover as,
we
would have
lost everything.
Even though
life is only
the familiar absurdity
of insults,
it is not possible
to go past
anything with
an involuntary smile.
So,
if what we are leftover as
finally
is the only evidence
of our existence,
on a day
when I
am not
leftover
as anything
for anyone,
I will leave
from here
without telling
anyone.
