Words have to be chosen with care. Once they are uttered they cannot be retracted, beware!
Sage Thiruvalluvar said many centuries ago thus:
யாகாவாராயினும் நா காக்க காவாக்கால்
சோகாப்பர் சொல்லிழுக்குப் பட்டு
‘Whatever else one may guard or not, they must guard their tongue.
If they don’t guard it, they will be put to grief for having used words that are inappropriate.’
Poet Uma Mohan rephrases the essence of that ancient wisdom in this short poem in Tamil which is reproduced here alongside an English translation by moi with her prior permission:
பொதுவில்தான் கிடக்கிறது
கொஞ்சிய
வெம்பிய
கசந்து துப்பிய அத்தனை சொல்லும்
என்
மௌனம் பீதியுடன்
பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது
எதை எடுக்கப்போகிறாய் என்று
உன் மௌனமும் ரகசியமாக ஓடிவந்து எனக்கும் எனக்கும் என்கிறது
All the words
of cooing prattle
prematurely withered
that tasted bitter
and spat out
are lying
in the open.
My silence
is looking on
with apprehension
at which one
you are going
to pick up.
You silence too
runs up secretly
and demands
“For me too! For me too!
